Our Projects

Take a look at some of our stand out retrofit and renovation projects...

Dartmoor Project

Over eighteen months, we gave this beautiful heritage building a new lease of low-carbon life for the next hundred years. A complex, deep, whole-house retrofit of a much-loved property in a rural and highly exposed setting — and a real showcase of what's possible in UK retrofit when design, skill and determination come together.

Delivering a result of this magnitude, in a location this difficult, took a genuine collaboration between our sister company Dartmoor Energy, The Retrofit Company and our exceptional local contractors. It was a demanding project with its fair share of curveballs along the way — and the result is one every one of us is proud of.

How it came together

The project began with Dartmoor Energy carrying out a Whole House Energy Efficiency report, setting out a realistic, fully costed path to decarbonisation and producing in-depth designs for every measure. Dartmoor Energy also handled the planning application drawings and submissions, and provided design support throughout the build.

The Retrofit Company then delivered the works as main contractor — bringing in the best local installers, and project managing the build from start to finish as a single point of contact for the client.

Scope of works

  • New three-phase grid connection

  • New three-phase distribution and groundworks

  • Roof repairs and a complete new roof covering, including gutters and rainwater goods

  • Loft and sloping-ceiling insulation - wood fibre

  • New timber-frame heritage double glazing

  • Ventilation upgrades

  • Two Valliant air source heat pumps in cascade, with radiator upgrades

  • Smart air bricks - Airex

  • 12 kWp solar PV system with SigEnergy battery storage and EV charging

  • Draught-proofing throughout

The result

A home transformed — warm, healthy and comfortable, running entirely without fossil fuels. A genuine showcase of what's achievable through high-quality design, skilled local companies, and a great deal of determination, and proof that even the most challenging heritage properties can be brought into a low-carbon future.

Totnes Project

Dormer bungalows are some of the hardest homes to keep warm — all those sloping ceilings, dormers and roof junctions add up to a lot of surface area losing heat. This much-loved Totnes home was a case in point: a complicated layout with minimal, ageing insulation, leaving it persistently cold and expensive to heat.

We took a whole-house approach to put that right — improving the fabric first, then upgrading the heating, ventilation and energy generation so every measure works together. The result is a warm, comfortable and efficient home that finally feels the way it should, all year round.

Scope of works

  • Internal wall insulation to the entire first floor

  • Existing kitchen and bookcases removed, adapated and refitted

  • Flat roof insulation to the dormers

  • New windows and doors throughout

  • Loft insulation

  • An Ideal Air Source Heat Pump

  • 5 kWp Solar PV system with Sigenergy battery storage

  • Upgraded ventilation (dMEV) to keep the air fresh and free of condensation

The result

A transformed home — warm, draught-free and far cheaper to run, with clean electricity generated and stored on site and low-carbon heating throughout. A great example of how the right combination of measures can turn a cold, awkward property into a genuinely comfortable place to live.

More than insulation and heat pumps

This scheme is about making homes warmer, healthier and more affordable to run — especially for the residents who need it most. We've always believed retrofit should be local, trusted and occupant-focused, and the design of this programme reflects exactly that. Delivering work of this scale across the city, to a consistently high standard, is what we do best.

Our thanks to Plymouth City Council and Plymouth Energy Community for their continued trust.
